Iota Iota Lambda History
Located in the birthplace of the first African-American intercollegiate fraternity in the U.S., the Iota Iota Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha (commonly referred to as The Ithaca Alumni Chapter) represents Fraternity members living in and around the communities of Ithaca, Cortland, and Corning, NY. Brothers of The Ithaca Alumni Chapter are leaders in their professions and local communities, and include university professors and administrators, engineers, entrepreneurs, educators, public officials, and graduate and professional school students, among other fields.
IIL was originally organized and chartered January 10, 1969 as an alumni chapter seated in Rome, New York.
Chartered members in Rome were Brothers Harry J. Bilton, Jr., Harold E. Cheatham, Morrice M. Davis, Jr., Neville W. Harper, Vernon J. Harris, Edwin M. Johnson, Alvin Lewis Petty, Andrew Williams, and Samuel A. Winfield, Jr.
Over the years the demographics of that town changed to the point where it could no longer support a chapter. On May 19, 2001, the chapter charter was transferred to Ithaca, New York. At that time a group of men sought to bring the city its first formal alumni chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha.
The brothers responsible for the charter transfer included: Brothers Marcus Allen, Dr. Ralph Christy, Dr. Donald Graham, Dr. Robert L. Harris, Dr. Vincent Howell, Darrell Jones, Abe Lee, Benjamin McCarter, Ozias Moore, Bert Reed, Dr. Kenneth Robinson, Dr. Andre Smith, and LeNorman Strong.
We are especially honored and proud to conduct the work of Alpha Phi Alpha alongside Brothers of The Alpha Chapter at Cornell University, our Fraternity's founding chapter. Please use the links at the top of this page to learn more about The Ithaca Alumni chapter, including our current roster of Brothers. Also included is information for prospective Fraternity members. Finally, for Alpha Phi Alpha Brothers who are planning to visit Ithaca and Cornell, we especially invite you to contact members of Iota Iota Lambda prior to your trip with any questions or for suggestions of things to do.
